We will be…

Surprised by

Rather than introduce the new voice of another interim pastor to our pulpits at this time, we have invited a company of preachers from our COS family to open and unpack God’s word for us.

An added “plus” will be our opportunity to get to know these members of our COS family better!

Service in the Large Worship Space

Gary Burge • April 29, August 19, August 26, September 2
After teaching for many years at Wheaton (Ill.) College, Gary joined the faculty of Calvin Theological Seminary in 2017 to teach New Testament. He with his wife Carol began worshiping at COS this winter. An adult daughter with her family lives here in Grand Rapids, and another daughter in Colorado.

Dale Cooper • May 6, May 13
Dale is husband to Marcia, father to four married children and grandfather to fourteen. Memories of his years as teacher/pastor (Chaplain Coop) at Calvin College are chock-full of the surprising adventures of following Jesus. A special delight:  to sit regally atop the seat of a 1941 John Deere “B”, enthralled by its engine’s inimitable sounds!

Andrew Mead • May 20 (Prism), June 3, July 15 (Prism and VBS)
In September, “Interim Co-Pastor” Andrew Mead will join Karen Campbell, dropping the “interim” portion of the label! Andrew is married to Jana and they have two boys: Asher (3) and Oliver (8 months).

Kurt Schaefer • May 27
Kurt with his wife Anne have worshiped at COS since Kurt began teaching economics at Calvin College in 1987. He completed his M.Div. at Calvin Seminary in 2014. He has served two terms as an elder, and is currently the parish accordionist!

Todd Cioffi • June 10, June 24, July 1, July 8
Todd uses his pastoral experience and training to teach “Congregational and Ministry Studies” at Calvin College.  He also is the Co-Director of the “Calvin Prison Initiative” which teaches college courses inside the prison.  We at COS are grateful for Todd’s work on our Pastoral Search Team.

Eric Sarwar • June 17
Using a unique Pakistani instrument, Eric sang and played an original Advent lament during our COS “Lessons and Carols” several years ago. Joined at last by his family, he is working on his PhD at Fuller Theological Seminary while also pastoring several Pakistani congregations in southern California.

Ron Rienstra • July 22, July 29
Ron is Professor of Preaching and Worship Arts at Western Theological Seminary in Holland, Michigan.  He has been a member of COS, on and off, since its days as “Fellowship of the Acts.” His wife, Debra, teaches at Calvin College and they have three grown children.

Jen Curran • August 5
Jen worked with COS college-age and young adults while at COS. She received her M.Div. from Regent Seminary in 2009, and currently co-pastors New Hope Community Church in Shelby, Michigan, with her husband Tony, one of our former Resident Pastors.

Paul Kortenhoven • May 6, August 12
Paul has been a CRC missionary, teacher, pastor, development worker, and peacemaker in West Africa. The Kortenhoven family served first in Nigeria, then for 23 years in the Muslim village of Foria, northern Sierra Leone.

Ann Kapteyn • June 3, August 19
Ann is currently a Bible translation consultant for Wycliffe Bible translators. With husband Ray and children, she has served as a Wycliffe missionary in both Brazil and Cameroon. She and Ray serve our COS college-age young adults in a variety of ways.

Albert Strydhorst • June 24
Albert is the Director of International Ministries for Timothy Leadership Training Institute—a training program for pastors and evangelicals in the global church. Albert, Carolyn, and their family were missionaries in Nigeria from 1994 – 2012 and have been members of COS since coming to Grand Rapids in 2012.

Mark Fackler • July 1
Mark Fackler, recently retired from Calvin’s faculty, now coordinates COS’ “English as a Second Language” program.  He and wife Ann have spent lots of time in East Africa where Ilchartunyiani seems to be their retreat center of choice.

Chris Klein • July 8
Chris Klein currently serves as Minister of Congregational Life at Church of the Servant, and as a pastoral psychotherapist in private practice. He is the spouse of Jane Klein, and together they are doing what they can to raise their three children well.  He is currently appreciating Womanist Midrash by Wil Gafney, and is oddly interested in the British monarchy after watching two seasons of The Crown.

Rich Rienstra • July 29
Rev. Richard Rienstra serves Church of the Servant as the volunteer pastor for Restorative Justice and Reentry Ministries. Since 2004, he and Carol, along with their son Troy Rienstra, have shaped the ministry of COS Prisoners in Christ,  a team that worked with Prison Congregations of America and CRCNA Home Missions to establish Christian Reformed prison congregations in Michigan and Iowa, and was a catalyst for the Calvin Prison Initiative.

Barbara Schultze • August 5
Barbara has made COS her church home for nearly 30 years, serving as Parish Nurse and in other capacities, most visibly as a liturgical dancer. She was ordained in 2012 and currently serves as a Grace Hospice Chaplain.
