New Staff update: Council is pleased to announce the temporary appointment of Maria Beversluis Van Leeuwen as Pastoral Care Coordinator. The Facility Search team announces the temporary hiring of Jay De Man as Facility Manager.  He is a recent graduate of Calvin University and has been worshiping with us for over a year. He will be working up to 25 hours a week beginning January 13 – June 20. He will then be getting married and moving to Chicago. This 6 month period will help the Facility team to decide whether the number of budgeted hours is realistic after the departure of Kenny and Ellen Westrate on January 31.

Retirement Celebration for Ellen Westrate – Due to Ellen’s recent heart surgery the planning team pushed back the date of the celebration to Sunday, March 1 following a potluck lunch after the Prism Service. Please mark your calendar to celebrate Ellen’s faithful service to COS for 26 years!  More details will follow.

Emergency Appeal for Blood – Please Help!  Versiti Blood Center of Michigan is issuing an emergency appeal for blood donations! Due to the busy holiday season, inclement weather, and seasonal illness, donations began declining in December. Our communities are facing a potential crisis situation and blood donations are needed immediately. Patients in our community rely on the generosity of blood donors to maintain a safe blood supply. For an appointment, please call (866) MI BLOOD. If you donated at our last drive here on November 11, you may donate again now. If you donate by tomorrow, Monday, 1/20, you will still be eligible to donate at our next COS drive on March 16. Thank you!  —Ruth Huisman & Beth Karanicola

Registration is open for the Feb. 28-29 Understanding Racism Workshop. We have developed new content and have shortened these Understanding Racism Workshops to two days: 9am-5pm each day. This workshop experience is still designed to explore the deep racial complexity of the US and to begin to explore paths for restoration. Our goal is to gain insight in understanding systemic racism through the eyes of faith and scripture in order to become the Beloved Community. We encourage all leaders and members at Church of the Servant to attend one of these workshops. This effort helps us to become focused and work together to address one of our country’s greatest troubles. Register online at
