Fourth Week of Advent, Sunday, December 20, 2020
On this fourth Sunday in Advent, December 20, we will continue to worship using our zoom format, individually, but still as one body, united in Christ This Sunday, Rev. Karen Campbell will bring us a message based on the scriptures of Psalm 89:1-4,19-29 & Luke 1:26-38, and we will welcome new members to the COS church family.
As we “journey to the manger” this Advent season, GPS has invited Wes Granberg-Michaelson to speak on a life of pilgrimage Dec. 20 following our 10am Zoom worship services. Join the GPS Breakout Room after the services to participate. Here is Wes’ preview of his presentations:
Advent allows us to hit the pause button, and journey inward to replenish our souls for the days ahead. That’s what we’ll explore for two sessions through the lens of pilgrimage. A centuries old practice discarded by the Reformation but now being revived, pilgrimage is a way to embody faith, not by how we talk but by where we walk. And understood as a metaphor, a pilgrim learns what to leave behind in order to step ahead and follow the Way. We’ll explore the central questions that address each of us as pilgrims of faith even as we shelter in place.
Resources: This second of two sessions will be based on Wes Granberg-Michaelson’s new book, “Without Oars: Casting Off into a Life of Pilgrimage.” Information can be found at: www.wesgm.com
Wes has written a Reflection Guide, based on each chapter, which can be downloaded for free: https://ms.broadleafbooks.com/downloads/Without%20Oars_ReflectionGuide_WEB.pdf

Journey to the Manger on Wednesday, 6:30pm
Upper elementary kids may enjoy the advent Journey to the Manger on Wednesday nights at 6:30pm on the COS Facebook Page. If you picked up or received a bits and bobbins bag or have craft supplies around your home, you can use them to make Advent Art during this FB Live event. Though Journey to the Manger is geared toward adults and teens, children are welcome to participate as well. If your family missed the few Wednesdays, no problem, it’s still available here.
For Families and Everyone
Christmas Eve 5:00pm Service and Musical Prelude
Thank you for everyone who played storyteller, and provided music for our Christmas Eve Service and Musical Prelude! Don’t forget to tune in to our YouTube channel on Christmas Eve at 5pm to enjoy the service and sing along with all the music. You’ll want to have a candle available to light for the final song, Silent Night. We will be using a new feature on Facebook to premiere the video at 5pm. It won’t be available before 5pm, and you won’t be able to pause, rewind, or any of the usual Youtube video features until after the whole service has aired in full. We hope this will encourage families to join the service right at 5pm, to watch together as a whole congregation, and use the Youtube chat feature to comment. Special thanks to Dave Hartwell and Maria Stapert for the video editing work! Click on the YouTube channel link above at 5pm!
On Christmas Eve at 10, 10:30, and 11 pm we will celebrate the birth of our Savior with brief, outdoor, in-person worship services. We will gather in the courtyard behind the church as we did for our summer outdoor worship services. The service will include carol singing and scripture reading, ending with singing “Silent Night” by candlelight. We will be masked and distanced the whole time. The services will be brief enough that you can plan to stand for the whole service.
Please sign up for a time slot by using this Eventbrite link and choosing “Select a Time”. We’re offering multiple times so that we can abide by the health advice to restrict outdoor group gatherings to 25 persons.
On Christmas morning we will gather at 10 am via Zoom. We will be led in singing carols with musicians live from the sanctuary. Jack Roeda will bring us the Word from Titus 2:11-14.
The time for Action has come! For weeks now, we have witnessed the multiple ways COS strives to be the hands and feet, the Living Word in Action. It is time now to make your pledge. We are grateful for the 57 individuals and households who have already pledged about $575,000. We remind you that pledging is part of our service, an expression of our faith in God’s care for us, and our responsibility to use well what God has entrusted to us. No pledge is too small or too great. We give according to how we have been blessed. Please join in with your fellow servants at COS.
Christmas Food Boxes – Next Wednesday Dec 23 from noon- 7 pm, Christmas food boxes will be available for pick up or delivery. Please come to the front entrance and a box for the household will be given to you. Call the church with any questions, 956-7611.
