Sunday, August 11 our worship will be a combined Standard English and Basic English service, held at 10am in the large sanctuary.

As COS continues to deepen our discernment about sexuality and life together in Christ, please join us this Sunday Aug. 11 from 8:30 – 9:50am in room 3 off the café. Two RCA pastors currently writing a book on marriage and celibacy will share their work:

Two Ways of the Cross: Rediscovering Marriage and Celibacy in Light of the Contemporary Sexuality Debate

How do the two vocations of marriage and celibacy witness in their own unique, complementary ways to the gospel? In what ways do they witness to the cross, and the new creation? Steven Rodriguez and Kevin Slusher, two pastors committed to spiritual friendship, one married with children, one gay and committed to a life of celibacy, each bring a unique perspective to these questions.

Next Sunday

Next Sunday August 18, immediately following the worship service there will be a brief congregational meeting for the purpose of presenting the 2019-2020 proposed budget.

Gender and Sexuality Acceptance Group – Sunday, August 18:

Sunday Evening Book Club – Little and Lion, Brandy Colbert (2017) (336 pages). The Gender and Sexuality Acceptance Group is open to everyone interested in joining our discussions and programs on gender and sexuality. All are welcome. Our events are safe spaces, planned with the goal of the full inclusion and participation of people who identify as LGBTQ+ and their families.

Church News

Due to our annual carpet cleaning, the COS building will be closed to meetings and events this week Monday through Thursday.

The Church of the Servant 2019-2010 proposed budget has been distributed via email and is also available on the COS website. You can find some hard copies of the proposed budget summary on the café counter, and there are also limited copies of the proposed budget detail available in the church office.

Our giving for this week totaled $34,368.33 (with weekly online giving and our monthly giving). Our current giving for the month of August is $34,368.33.

The finance committee and council are very grateful for the congregation’s special giving following our communications early in the summer. However as of the end of July our total giving remains short of the approved budget by $56,000.  It is imperative that we close that gap as much as possible before the fiscal year ends on August 31.  Doing so will enable a strong start to the new fiscal and program year.  Please prayerfully consider your support of the ministries of COS. Are you current on your pledge? Might you be able to give 10 or 15% more than your pledge?  Thank you very much.

Knitters’ Night Out – Monday, 12 August at 7:30pm.  Knitters (and other needle crafters) are welcome to join us at Deanna van Dijk’s home.

ESL tutors needed.  We open September 10, yet five classes do not have a tutor.   Please consider this important outreach.  See Mark today.  He is looking for you! We also need a snack prep specialist! Tues/Thursday evenings for one hour, 6:30-7:30pm.

Needed- Additional drivers and substitute drivers of minivans to be on a schedule to pick up our new American families and bring them to the BES worship on Sunday morning at 10am.

Did you know that blood drives hosted by places of worship, companies, schools, and civic organizations supply roughly half of all blood donations across the US? During the summer months it’s particularly difficult to meet the need for blood donations since schools are not in session and many donors go away on vacation. Our blood drive here in two weeks is important to our community! Monday, August 26, 2-7pm, is an opportunity for you to share your gift of life! You can sign up online at https://donate.miblood.org/donor/schedules/drive_schedule/108867 for an appointment to donate, or on the scheduling poster in the café. Questions? Contact Beth Karanicola or Ruth Huisman. Thank you!

The Refugee Support Team will meet at Helen Bonzelaar’s home this Monday, August 12.

Joyful Noise Orchestra – The JNO will be leading the music for our worship on Sunday, August 18.  If you play a band or orchestra instrument, please consider playing with this group on the 18th.  We will rehearse on Wednesday, August 14 at 6:30pm in the sanctuary, and again on Sunday morning, August 18 at 9:00am.  Music is ready to be picked up in the music room.  You can sign up in the music room or by emailing Maria Stapert (maria.stapert@coscrc.org).

In April of this year, we celebrated 10 years of the Basic English Service. This celebration included a booklet which shared some of the history, current joys, and future hopes of BES. From BES: “These words and images are offered in thanksgiving for what God has done over the last ten years in the Basic English Service at Church of the Servant. As we look back in celebration, we also desire to learn where the Lord is leading us. Our common destination is his table, where we meet with brothers and sisters from all over the world to celebrate his amazing love. We give thanks that we can share in this blessing, offered to all.” We invite you to view an online version of this booklet at coscrc.org/bes-celebration-book. Printed copies will be made available soon.

COS is looking for a Basic English Service Music Coordinator to help and lead in the planning of the BES worship services that welcome and utilize the creative and spiritual expression of congregants’ gifts.  This is a part time position (12 hours a week for an initial period of one year).  For further details consult the church’s website at coscrc.org/jobs
