Lessons & Carols, 2007

Last week’s Lessons & Carols service was a wonderful time of worship. There is something incredibly powerful about God’s people coming together to recite and sing their deepest longings while waiting for Christ’s advent. Or, as the carol “O Little Town of Bethlehem” puts it “The hopes and fears of all the years are met in thee tonight.”

The choir, strings, guitarchestra and piano all took part, as did seven readers. For copyright reasons, we can’t post too much of the recording we made. However, we hope to produce a lessons & carols CD in the future that will feature many of these songs. In the meantime, here’s a little taste: “Come, Thou Long-Expected Jesus.”

It gave me a little chill or quickening to hear it. I think clear, simple church music is the most beautiful music in the world. The Lord is in it.

    Blessings,

    Greg,
Reflecting over the Lessons and Carols service, I too was thrilled by the music and worship. Starting off with Dorothy Otte’s reading, even if it was Revelation rather than Genesis was inspiring. I felt as though it was Dorothy’s farewell message to all of us and I have only known her a few years. The beautiful city of God.

I liked the selection of music and the variety of musicians. I was especially pleased to have several new voices with the choir. I believe it was encouraging to all of us. As difficult as it may be, I feel the Sat AM rehearsal was the clincher with practicing in the space the service was presented and hearing the arrangement of the voices. It all contributed to a sense of confidence and openness for the spirit to inspire the singers. Both David and I have been humming “Emmanuel Now” all week-a sign of a good piece of music. Thanks for all the time and effort to write compositions for the choir and for the congregation. The children’s voices were a special part of the evening, as well.

Sometimes our lives are touched by lightning and they are never the same afterwards. May it always be so.
