Christians for Prisoners & Prisoners for Christ Update: Troy Rienstra realized that something big was going to take place at the Newberry Correctional Facility when lawnmowers were buzzing around after 5PM on Tuesday, July 7. Sure enough – the next day the director of the Michigan Department of Corrections, Patricia Caruso, toured that upper peninsula facility. When she passed by the garden in which he was working, Troy was prompted by the Holy Spirit to ask the guards if he could have a word with her. When Director Caruso herself gave him permission to speak, Troy said, “I’m Troy Rienstra and I want to thank you for authorizing the prison congregation at Bellamy Creek. You may know my father, Rich Rienstra, who is the pastor.” The director, who is used to receiving complaints about the work of the department, was pleased to affirm the good work of the church behind bars, and reached out and shook Troy’s hand. This encounter is truly a blessing from God.
